More 2012
Hollywood has released a new movie about 2012, those who have pay TV may have also seen the History Channel present documentaries titled “The Lost Book of Nostradamus” and “Nostradamus 2012” as well as several shows about “Mayan Doomsday Prophecies” and similar themes. Many people are starting to ask, “Is it possible? Could all these predictions be true?” Several have asked me is it possible that the disasters presented in the movie could really happen. I have not seen the movie but I have seen shorts and been told of many of the things that feature in the film and my short answer is yes it is all possible. The producers have however ignored details of what predictions actually say. Various prophets predicted these events and the aftermath, not just the Mayans.
The Bible, Nostradamus and others tell of a period of severe disruption. Not just cataclysmic weather and geological upheavals but of astronomical events, war and evil deeds done by men. What I consider one of the best explanations is in the book of Zechariah, 13:8 “And it shall come to pass, that in all the land, saith the Lord, two parts therein shall be cut off and die; but the third shall be left therein.” 13:9 “And I will bring the third part through the fire, and refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The Lord is my God.” This prophecy indicates that two thirds of the Earth’s population will perish and one third will survive but that they will go through extreme difficulties. The ratio here is rather fascinating because a recent worldwide survey disclosed that only one third of Earth’s population are religious enough to pray every day. If the Biblical predictions are correct then there is a guiding hand that will protect the same percentage of the world’s population.
Other interesting predictions come from Mother Shipton, a 16th Century English prophetess who was burned as witch. Not all the prophecies attributed to her can be verified and there was a prediction that was later proved to be a forgery. The verses commonly attributed to her were widely circulated in the 1800s and even if not all are hers there are some amazing accuracies. The predictions include cars, planes, submarines, tractors and even fashion none of which were known when the prophecies were published.
Of the end of the world Mother Shipton says,
“When pictures seem alive with movements free
When boats like fishes swim beneath the sea,
When men like birds shall scour the sky
Then half the world, deep drenched in blood shall die.
For those who live the century through
In fear and trembling this shall do.
Flee to the mountains and the dens
To bog and forest and wild fens.
For storms will rage and oceans roar
When Gabriel stands on sea and shore
And as he blows his wondrous horn
Old worlds die and new be born.”
This may refer to WW2 or to a war yet to come, but references to movies, planes and submarines are obvious and there is also a reference to climatic changes. The predictions also imply a comet colliding with the Earth.
“A fiery dragon will cross the sky…
… For seven days and seven nights
Man will watch this awesome sight.
The tides will rise beyond their ken
To bite away the shores and then
The mountains will begin to roar
And earthquakes split the plain to shore.
And flooding waters, rushing in
Will flood the lands with such a din
But the predictions finish just as do the Biblical prophecies with a vision of better times.
And before the race is built anew
A silver serpent comes to view
And spew out men of like unknown
To mingle with the earth now grown
Cold from its heat and these men can
Enlighten the minds of future man.
To intermingle and show them how
To live and love and thus endow
The children with the second sight.
A natural thing so that they might
Grow graceful, humble and when they do
The Golden Age will start anew.
The dragon’s tail is but a sign
For mankind's fall and man's decline.
So despite predictions of destruction and suffering there are also predictions of a new better future for those who survive. Meanwhile, astronomers and other scientists have rejected the apocalyptic forecasts, on the grounds that the anticipated events are precluded by astronomical observations, or are unsubstantiated by the predictions that have been generated from these findings. NASA likens fears about 2012 to those about the Y2K bug in the late 1990s, suggesting that an adequate analysis should stem fears of disaster.
